How difficult would it be to modify a bifold door to a french door?
I have a 36″ doorway that is between my dining room and a large laundry room/half bath. There is no door for the doorway, and I would like to put french-style doors there, but custom ordering them is too expensive. I’m thinking of buying the hardware for french doors, purchasing a bifold door (approx. $40), and modifying it to open and close like french doors. Has anyone done this, or know how complicated it would be for someone that’s pretty darn handy?
someone that’s pretty darn handy huh? well let’s start at the beginning.a bifold door kit is designed specifically for a 36″ opening. this would be very easy if you have solid wood as a jamb (or something SOLID for hinge screws to bite into). beyond that it’s simply a matter of disassembling the bifold unit and attaching the hinges. you may need to mortise the hinges. Look up mortise. decide where in the jamb you wanna place the door (closer to the inside or outside according to which way the doors are swinging, otherwise they’ll bump into the jamb at the 90degree position restricting full opening, know what i mean?) once you determine that nail door stop on the three inside edges of the jamb for the doors to rest against, attach some sort of magnetic catches at the top of the jamb and doors and some pull knobs. when hanging the doors be patient and leave an eighth inch reveal around the edges and a quarter inch reveal between them. BAM!!! your done…..think you can do it?…..let me know if you have any questions…. i’ll coach you through it before you start…..a little more info would be helpful before you attempt this…..it’s saturday morning and i’m bored……can ya tell?
