The Cohesive Gel Breast Implant Is Practically Immune To Implant Rupture And Leakage
Prior to signing up for breast augmentation surgery, you need to fully asses the potential risks involved. There are risks associated with the invasive surgery that can lead to mild or severe complications such as death. Then there are a variety of post surgery complications that can occur such as the onset of infection. When it comes to breast implants, not only are you subject to the risks involved during surgery and after surgery, but also the long term risks associated with the implants themselves.
One of the latest implants to become available in the United States has been in use elsewhere in the world for over 20 years. That implant is called the cohesive gel breast implant. You might have heard of this implant by its nickname: The Gummy Bear Breast Implant.
The implant is currently undergoing clinical trial by the FDA. That means the implant is not yet approved for unrestricted use in the United States. It could be many more years before the FDA decides the implant is safe enough for human use. Considering the problems associated with traditional silicone gel implants, there is a strong chance that the cohesive implant could remain on the shelf for many years to come; the FDA doesn’t want to give its stamp of approval without first performing extensive research.
Although the implant is not yet approved, an American woman can still request it for her surgery. She will need to schedule a consultation with an FDA approved plastic surgeon that is participating in the FDA’s clinical trial. However, it must be mentioned that acceptance into the trial is difficult. If you are accepted, the government will reimburse a portion if not all of the cost of your surgery. In exchange, you will have to agree to many years of follow up appointments with your cohesive gel surgeon.
The cohesive gel implant is only available in an anatomical shape. That means it’s preformed at the factory in the shape of a real breast; thin at the top and heavier near the bottom. Its slope is very similar to that of a real breast. It’s because of their anatomical shape that the cohesive gel implant must be corrected should it rotate within the breast pocket. Any woman that has a rotated anatomical breast implant will want to fix the rotation as quickly as possible because her breast will appear abnormal.
The cohesive implant cannot leak its gel. Traditional silicone implants and saline implants both use liquid filler. That filler can leak into the human body if the exterior shell of the implant is ruptured or punctured. Cohesive gel implants also use an exterior shell. However, their filler is a solid mass of gel. Because it’s a solid mass, it can’t leak. You can poke a thousand holes into a cohesive gel implant and it will never leak any liquid whatsoever.
Rippling is when the surface area of the implant bunches together. While that’s not necessarily a cause for health concern, it will create a very unsightly breast skin – the surface skin of a woman’s breast will also bunch together much like a scrunched up sandwich baggie (very unsightly!). Most surgeons overfill the implants slightly as means of preventing implant rippling. Cohesive gel implants are highly resistant to rippling.
In most of the areas of concern that are associated with breast implants, the cohesive gel implant is extremely safe. While it might take a few more years before the FDA approves this implant for unrestricted use within the United States, there’s a strong chance the cohesive implant will earn the title of the safest implant device in the world.
To learn more about these implants, speak with an FDA approved surgeon that is participating in the clinical trial.
