Informed Consent (the newest novel by author Sandi Glahn) combines medical depth and suspense to create an intelligent, page-turning extravaganza that not only engages the mind but also massages the heart.
   Book Description:

Jeremy Cramer, M.D. is the next Einstein of infectious disease research. While working on a way to revive water submersion victims, he makes a breakthrough discovery in AIDS research that thrusts him into the center of a media frenzy. But the publicity turns negative and his marriage reaches the breaking point when he accidentally infects a colleague and his negligence allows his son to contract a life threatening disease. The viruses test the limits of his new formula and his ethics. In his frantic efforts to save his son and his marriage, he must decide whether to allow his child to die or violate the rights of a young transplant donor. The choice forces him to stand face-to-face with the unfathomable love required to sacrifice an only son.”

My review:

Although personally disturbing to immerse myself in the topic due to my existing immersion with such close proximity to so many AIDS victims here in Kenya, I found the story itself to be uplifting and encouraging.

I couldn’t put it down. I read Informed Consent in a day because it would not allow me to do otherwise. The characters were flawlessly developed, deep and real. Having a penchant for “realness” [i.e. just check out the titles of my last 2 books!] and a strong liking of logic, I typically don’t like most novels. Just bein’ real with you. I’m not a fan of fiction. Generally novels (even bestsellers) take shortcuts, leap beyond logic and paint a portrait of life that resembles anything but reality.

I appreciated Sandi’s book because it included a storyline that followed logically and developed realistically while still maintaining interesting and thought-provoking concepts. I’ve read other books of Sandi’s in the past and I truly believe that Informed Consent is her best craft yet. She writes with a mature voice and a seasoned knowledge of humanity.
